70cm UHF Repeater Build Up, Update 2

Well..... I have not had time to even look at the parts for the repeater in almost a week. The CQ WW DX contest was last weekend, and Monday the East Coast was hit with Hurricane Sandy. Being that I work for the electric utility company we have been busy with 12hr shifts since Monday, and there is no end in sight. I also have no power at home, so it is dark and chilly at night

70cm UHF Repeater Build Up, Update 3

So, still working 12hr/day storm detail, although we should be winding down soon, I was able to get a couple hours to cobble together the basic setup for the 440 repeater. I made up the coax cables to connect with the duplexer. The repeater is...

PT0S, Maybe....

PT05, St Peter and St. Paul Rocks are a small group of islets and rocks approximately  520 nautical miles (990 km) east of the Brazilian city of Natal, right near the Equator. It is about 4000 miles (6300 km) South East from my QTH. What makes this one special is that the Brazilian government has a ban on amateur radio activities on the island, due to environmental concerns and safety reasons.

Repeater Testing

Well, results are less then stellar at this point. It has about a 2 mile radius at best. This is with only 6 Watts of output. I am fairly sure it hears much better then it transmits, One of two things will have to happen. 1) get an amp! At 6W I am already over the 100% duty cycle rating of the TKR-820 (5W) I can go to 20W if I run a 50% duty cycle, but if anyone gets to rag chewing, it is going to stress it beyond what I am comfortable with. A nice 50 or 100 watt amp should be fine, probably go 50W to start, and move up from there.  2) A better antenna would help as well.

PT0S, not looking good for the Log

Well between work, family and just a lack of on air time, I am not sure i will even get 1 PT0S in the log. Yeah, that bad. I was hoping for at least one, b ut the pileups were horrible, lids and cops everywhere. The group is planned to work until the 22nd, but that is thanksgiving. I am basically going to have tonight and a little part of tomorrow morning to get them. the good news is that I have heard of good luck with an early morning approach on 80M or maybe even 160M, around 07:00Z (3AM EST). I just want one for the log, well see how it goes.
